Rolling Stone Interview: “Britney Spears on Staying True to Herself, ‘Cute’ New Mobile Game”

In this new interview with Rolling Stone, Britney talks ‘Britney Spears: American Dream,’ where players fight to make it to the “A List”.

With a new album in the works and a Las Vegas residency underway, Britney Spears has been keeping a busy schedule so far this year. Her latest venture is a mobile game, Britney Spears: American Dream, in which players create a pop-singer character who competes to make it onto the recording industry’s “A List.”

The game was created by Glu, the same company behind the blockbuster Kim Kardashian: Hollywood app last year, as well as Katy Perry Pop and celebrity-driven games for Kardashian’s sisters, Kendall & Kylie and action film actor Jason Statham (Sniper X).

To succeed in Britney Spears: American Dream (which is available for iOS and Android devices), players must hobnob with managers and agents, put together a band, record fictional hit songs, pick out the perfect wardrobe and take advice from a digitized version of the “… Baby One More Time” singer. Its story and feel are similar to Kardashian’s Hollywood. Along the way, players face off with backstabbing pop stars, misguided hangers-on and paparazzi vying for attention. Spears fans will appreciate the game’s instrumental renditions of songs like “I’m a Slave 4 U,” “Toxic” and “Womanizer,” among others.

Between rehearsals for her Billboard Music Awards appearance this weekend, Spears answered questions from Rolling Stone via e-mail about what having her own game means to her.

Why did you want a mobile game?
It’s honestly not something I had ever given much thought to. The focus has been my career and for the last few years and my residency at Planet Hollywood. But I’m always looking for new ways to express myself creatively, and I’m excited for this opportunity.

What kinds of input did you give the Glu team for Britney Spears: American Dream? What went through your mind the first time you saw the digital version of yourself?
I gave a lot of input on my character. The game’s all about performing and making it in the music business. My show is a big part of that right now, so my character is wearing one of my favorite stage costumes in certain parts of the game. I wanted to make sure my hair was just right, little things like that. I was blown away when I saw the final “digital Britney.”

How far have you gotten in the game? I’m stuck on the “D List.”
Well … it’s not entirely fair because I’ve been playing a lot longer. I’m on the “A List.” 😉

What aspects of the game do you like the most?
There are so many things I love about the game. The art itself is just so cute and colorful and I had so much fun working with the team to put my character together. I think my favorite part is the audio that goes with my character. As you’re playing the game, you’ll see my character and hear my voice. I hope it gives my fans the feeling that I’m there with them.

The game is all about fighting to make it as a singer. What was the hardest part about “making it” for you?
The hardest part about this business is being able to stay true to yourself. I think I’ve gotten pretty good about that over time.

It’s a different world than when you did …Baby One More Time, as you know from your stint on X Factor. What advice do you give to young artists starting out now in real life?
Never give up on your dreams.

The game also emphasizes performance. What is your preshow ritual before a 22-song set, like you do in your Las Vegas residency?
My dancers and I always get together and do a prayer circle before each show.

Another aspect of the game is all the press celebrities have to do. How have you seen the media’s treatment of celebrities change in the past 10 years?
With social media in the mix now, I’d say things just move way faster than they did 10 years ago.

Cosmopolitan Interview: “And This Is Britney Spears’s Go-To Starbucks Order, FYI”

Read out below this new interview Britney gave to Cosmopolitan to promote her new mobile game “Britney Spears: American Dream”.

Oh, hey, did you know that Britney Spears just released an iPhone app? Because you really should know that, and you should also be playing it. Not right now, because you should read this first, but in a minute, OK?

As it happens, one of the first scenes in the game involves you meeting Britney at your local “Starbeans,” a fictional coffee shop that, you know, well, it’s Starbucks but the developers couldn’t get the rights to the name. You perform a quick song while she waits in line for her “strawberry whippaccino” and impress her so much that she sets you off on your quest for A-list musical fame.

Another way to impress Britney while she’s waiting to her caffeine fix IRL, though, would be to buy it for her. (I’m guessing here, technically, but when is a free Frapp not a good thing?!) Britney loves her Starbucks! So get the details here as, between breaks while she rehearses for this weekend’s Billboard Music Awards performance, Britney kindly answered a few of Cosmopolitan.com’s pressing questions about her app, her cellphone habits, and coffee, because well, it was either that or questions about the Kardashians.

You’re a regular Starbucks customer IRL — what’s your go-to coffee order?
Passion Tango Herbal Tea is my drink of choice.

So what made you decide to debut an iPhone game, which I’m obsessed with already, BTW. And what’s been your favorite part of the design process?
Thank you so much, I’m really glad you like it! I just think it’s going to be so cool to interact with my fans in a whole new way … I was really involved in the overall look and feel of the game. My favorite details are the different outfits I wear in the game because I’ve worn [many of] them in real life.

Are there any characters in the game that are maybe based on real-life people — like how everyone speculated Willow Pape in Kim Kardashian’s app was, you know, Paris Hilton? I’m wondering about that villainous Aston Kole in particular, TBH.
No! The game is its own little world.

So when you’re not playing it yourself, what are some of your other go-to apps?
Other than my game, I love Instagram.

Obviously, because you’re a selfie queen — what are some of your top tips for taking good selfies?
Just have fun and never take yourself too seriously.

And what’s your best IRL advice for people looking to break into the music industry — folks without you as their fairy godmother specifically?
No matter what, never give up on your dreams.

And keep that in mind, please, because, after all, it’s called Britney Spears: American Dream for a reason. Click through for Cosmopolitan.com’s full review/play-through, and then, please, get to downloading it. Britney would want you to!

THE STAR WHO DEFINED A GENERATION IS STILL IN THE CENTER OF THE RING THANKS TO HER BLOCKBUSTER LAS VEGAS EXTRAVAGANZA. A galaxy of musicians has graced the cover of V over the years, but only the star who appears on our 100th issue has a career that was born simultaneously with this magazine.

V1 dropped in September of 1999, only a few months after the release of …Baby One More Time, the landmark debut album that heralded the arrival of pop’s new princess, a Mickey Mouse Club alumnus who’d grown up into a music video Lolita, engineered by God to send the TRL generation into hysterics in the middle of Times Square.

Seventeen years, seven more albums, seven tours, two husbands, and two children later, Britney Spears is being captured by Mario Testino at Jim Goldstein’s architecturally renowned home in Los Angeles—the second time she’s posed for a V cover with the photographer. Her music of choice at the shoot includes female-driven hits from the past and current eras of pop: Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Selena Gomez. The vibe, she says, was relaxed. “It was really simple and sexy,” Spears recalls a few days later. “We were in a rock-and-roll guy’s house, which was out of this world, insanely beautiful. It was really different.” But Spears gives most of the credit for an enjoyable session to the maestro, Testino. “So much of it depends on the photographer you work with,” she says. “And he’s one of the best in the world. He was great, very quick, and we just had fun all day.”

Fun, relaxed, and efficient: all bywords for the way that Britney Spears exists in 2016. At 34 and a very “hands-on” single mother of two, she’s all about maintaining a work-life balance. She makes it apparent, in both arranging time for our interview and during the conversation itself, that nothing is more important to her than sons Sean Preston, 10, and Jayden, 9. Fortunately, Spears has a long-running gig happening that allows her to juggle her time between career and family most deftly: Piece of Me, her hit-packed show in residency at Las Vegas’s Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, which recently relaunched for a second two-year run, in revamped form. With Vegas only a quick 40-minute flight from her L.A. home and the boys, Spears plays three shows a week in six-week legs. “I’m on for six weeks, then off for six weeks,” she explains. It’s about as stable and low-stress a scenario as a working pop musician can find, in marked contrast to a world tour, which Spears says would typically keep her away from home for as many as six months. “I just love the lifestyle of being in Vegas and going back and forth. No traveling and going to all those places, and just having this be my home. It’s amazing. Actually, we just moved in the last few weeks to a new house. It’s only two minutes away from my old house, and it’s really nice, and big. It’s really open for the kids. So I get to stay there, and just go back and forth.”

The big question surrounding Piece of Me when it launched in December of 2013 was whether a residency by an artist with a younger fan base could sustain itself in casino land, where the Strip has long been populated by veteran performers with older, deep-pocketed followers. Yet as of last fall, Britney’s show was still at 75 percent capacity business, according to Billboard, and over its first two years, it’s averaged a nearly 85 percent box office. It’s been a financial boon for Planet Hollywood and Caesar’s Entertainment, was voted “Best Overall Show” in 2015 by the readers of the site Best of Las Vegas, and has become a prime attraction for the more youthful crowds now frequenting Sin City. But when Spears made the decision to re-up for another two years, she resolved to make some tweaks to the show. “Since I’d been doing it for so long, I just made a few changes to keep it fresh. It’s fun for me, so it doesn’t get too old.”

Daily “ass-kicking” rehearsals in January led to the launch of Piece of Me 2.0 on February 13th, featuring an updated setlist, choreography, dancers, costumes, and video production. The Vegas theatrics are there—fire, water (Spears was inspired by Cirque du Soleil’s hydroplaning show O), snow, and simulated flight—the latter of which has led to a few hiccups. In her second show of 2016, a flying apparatus didn’t work, and she had to descend from a tree perch via hidden staircase, while on another occasion, she was left hanging. “The harness came off,” she recalls, as though it was no big deal. “It hooks from the right and the left, but the right came off, so I was just hanging from the left. In the moment, I was totally freaked out. But then I just got down, and it was fine.” While the show’s setlist spans Spears’s best, from “Baby One More Time” through 2015’s duet with Iggy Azalea, “Pretty Girls,” there will be more changes on that front as well, adding songs as the year goes on from the singer’s forthcoming album, details of which have been kept tightly under wraps.

On her upcoming album: “Honestly, I’m just particular with this record. It’s my baby, and so I really want it done right. I would much rather have it be completely how I want it to be, whether that takes another year for me to do, or two months. I have no idea at this point. But I just know that the direction I’m going in is so good. It’s the best thing I’ve done in a long time. I’m proud of the work, and it’s very different; it’s not what you would think at all. But I’m not rushing anything. I just want it to be done right, so that my fans will truly appreciate it.”

On not being into technology: “Honestly, I still don’t use my computer. My kids use the computer more than I do! I understand that a lot of people are into it, and I have days where I write and stuff, but it’s really not for me. It’s not my thing.”

On haters: “Whoever is in the spotlight, people are really quick to judge. I mean, there are a lot of kids coming up who’ve experienced that. You know, Justin Bieber, he’s huge, and he experiences that. It’s just the way the world works, unfortunately. I’ve been doing this for 20 years. I kind of don’t pay attention to it. I have my relationship with God and myself and that’s what matters to me. I really don’t care what most people think.”

Larry Rudolph on Britney’s new album: “It’s different. It’s like Britney meets The Weeknd”

Read down below a new interview of Larry with Las Vegas Sun. He talks about Piece Of Me shows, working with Britney and her new album. We can’t wait!

Sometime between three and five years ago, Larry Rudolph was hit with an epiphany in Las Vegas — in the form of a mega-nightclub.

They were blossoming, such places as Tao and XS, later joined by Hakkasan and Omnia, riding a wave of hundreds of millions of dollars a year. The DJs, Tiesto and Calvin Harris and the like, were worldwide superstars, and the demographic visiting Las Vegas began to skew younger.

A good friend of Palms founder George Maloof, Rudolph had been tracking the changes in Las Vegas for more than a decade, and he realized that the clubs were devouring the city’s entertainment scene.

Rudolph had an idea of how to tap into this trend. Her name: Britney Spears.

“All of a sudden, with the EDM crowd and the opening of all these nightclubs, everything changed around, and you had a much younger fan base coming in who weren’t really the gamblers necessarily. They would go to the pool during the day, take a nap and go to the nightclubs at night,” Rudolph said during a recent interview on my KUNV 91.5-FM radio show also titled “The Kats Report.”

“So what I realized was there was this big hole there that was open for sort of a pregame situation that would lead into the club. It required a slight change in behavior, and Britney was the perfect artist to fill that hole because (clubgoers) all love her. She’s the perfect artist for that demographic, and we’ve built the perfect show for her.”

Spears has resumed her “Britney: Piece of Me” run at Axis at Planet Hollywood with a revamped show, which Rudolph says is “maybe 30 to 40 percent” new material. Spears also is about 80 percent finished with a yet-untitled album and under contract at Axis through Dec. 31, 2017.

Rudolph lives in Las Vegas and works out of his headquarters here. He also owns a residence at Lake Tahoe. His management company, Maverick, is a collection of nine major figures in the music-management industry and operates under the Live Nation umbrella. That company books shows at Axis, and Rudolph’s client list also includes Miley Cyrus, Avril Lavigne, Steven Tyler and Fifth Harmony.

Highlights from our chat at KUNV studios at Greenspun Hall on the UNLV campus:

The new show is not a revamp but a “refreshing”:

“Britney felt that we needed to add a few new elements and keep it fresh and interesting for herself and for the audience,” Rudolph said. “We’ve added a good, solid handful of songs that are going to make a big difference. We’ve added ‘I Love Rock ’n’ Roll’ (a cover of the Joan Jett version that hit No. 1 in 1982), ‘If You Seek Amy,’ ‘Breathe on Me,’ ‘Touch of My Hand.’ She’s doing an amazing dance medley to three Missy Elliott songs, and we’ll have a lot of new choreography, staging and props.

And one of those props is …

A guitar that rides like a mechanical bull, for “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll.”

“It’s an interesting prop, which we used a long time ago, and she gets on it, and it jumps up and down,” Rudolph said. “I’m glad we’re able to use it again here. Her director, Baz Halpin, put it all together, and it’s a real team effort.”

Even with new artists coming in to Axis, including Jennifer Lopez, the decision to update Spears’ show was unrelated to bookings in the venue:

“It wasn’t intentional in the sense that, ‘Oh, no, here comes Jennifer’s show, and we need to do a bigger and better show,’” Rudolph said. “Our show is a different show than Jennifer is doing; Jennifer is doing 120 shows over three years, and Britney will end up doing 260 shows over four years. It’s a very different thing, and Jennifer has a big career outside with her TV show on NBC (“Shades of Blue”) and a lot of film work. Britney is primarily a music artist, and 90 to 95 percent of her activities are as a music artist. She just felt, after two years, the show needed a refresh to keep the audience and her engaged and excited, and that was our motivation.”

He has no specific job description as Spears’ manager:

“I do little of absolutely everything,” Rudolph said with a chuckle. “I’ve known her since she was a kid, so there is a mutual respect, and it works so easily. We don’t agree on everything, and agreeing on everything is never the case, but we have great conversations and sometimes debates and creative decisions. After 21 years, she does trust my judgment.”

He stresses he did not “discover” Spears:

“I don’t know if you really ‘discover’ a human being unless you’re talking about being at the hospital when she was born,” Rudolph said with a laugh. “But I have known her since she was 13 years old, and she’d been off ‘The Mickey Mouse Club’ for about a year, which I had not seen. But she brought in a VHS tape and played me some stuff of her, and it was just amazing.”

Yet, it took a while for Spears to find an opening to a national audience:

“This was 1995, and if you look back, the pop charts were all urban music, Puffy and those types of artists. I said to Britney, ‘Go home, go to high school a couple of years, and pop music will go through a cyclical resurgence,’” Rudolph said. “That did happen a couple of years later, with The Spice Girls, Hanson, Backstreet Boys, and there was this massive opening for a female artist. Britney was 15 then, becoming gorgeous and amazingly talented. … She brought me some demos, and we walked around New York to four record companies until we finally got a deal, and the rest is history.”

The upcoming album is a new sound and approach:

“She is thrilled with it. I just spoke to her about it, and she’s saying it’s her favorite album she’s ever done,” Rudolph said. “It’s different. It’s like Britney meets The Weeknd. It’s got an interesting vibe, a lot of just really cool stuff, and she has not sounded better since I don’t know when. I think it’s going to do great, and people will absolutely love it.”

Larry Rudolph says that Britney’s new album is 80% done!

Well, this is EXCITING! In a new interview with Las Vegas Sun Larry Rudolph said that Britney’s new album is 80% done and this album is her favorite album that she has ever done.

He also confirms that Britney is meeting with The Weeknd to work on the album and that she has done “a lot of writing on the album”. According to him people will absolutely love it and she sounds amazing on it. The new album is not titled yet because it isn’t finished.

And talking about taking the Piece Of Me show overseas, he said that now there isn’t territorial restrictions on Brit’s contract with PH and that Britney will like to do festivals to promote the album and the residency, like the Rock In Rio. They MIGHT consider doing some international performances (He mentions Asia and Europe) but nothing is concrete at all.

At least for now, her last Piece Of Me show in Vegas is on December 31st, 2017.

Interview with Extra TV: Britney confirms a new album coming out soon and talks about the revamped show

As we told you before, Britney made an exclusive interview with Extra on February 13th and it’s finally here! Britney confirms that her new album is coming out soon and of course she talked about Piece Of Me show. Read down the full interview below.

Only “Extra’s” Mario Lopez was with Britney Spears this weekend before she kicked off the revamped edition of her Las Vegas “Piece of Me” residency at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, and Britney had quite the challenge for him: Britney dared Mario do to a bungee jump that she performs in the show during “Toxic” — in full costume!

Of the revamped show, Britney shared. “I have a new album coming out soon, so it’s just like a taste of what’s to come. The new stuff isn’t actually in it yet, but there’s a lot of surprises. There’s a lot of new costume changes. There’s a lot of new surprise songs in there from artists I really respect. There’s a lot of prop changes, and there’s more to come this year that’s gonna be changed.”

The 34-year-old made headlines in August 2015 when she was caught on camera telling her “Piece of Me” audience “Frankly, men can suck my f**king toe.” The video went viral, and when asked what prompted her to say it, Britney laughed, “Men issues. Daddy issues. I’m behind that now.”

“Piece of Me” has been attended by big stars, including Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, and Selena Gomez. When asked which celebs were there to see her, Britney responded, “I’d rather not know because it makes me nervous. I really look up to those people.”

Another celebrity fan of Britney’s is Adele who recently told NPR, “Britney is the queen.” When told this, Britney replied, “I love her. She’s great. She’s the f**king queen!”

Spears has been posting some seriously flexible photos doing yoga on Instagram, and her secret to her fit body is… taking classes with everyday people! “I like to go to class, I like to compete with people. I get on the treadmill and I try to run as fast as they do. So I like to be with a bunch of people, and I go to classes.”

Her sons, Sean Preston, 10, and Jayden James, 9, are proving they’re just like any other kids — they’re obsessed with “Star Wars.” Britney said, “They’re at the ‘Star Wars’ movie right now. This is the second time they’ve seen it. They just keep going back and they love it. I’m not really interested in that, but that’s their thing.”

Britney Spears talks revamped ‘Piece of Me’ at Axis and new music comin very soon!

Robin Leach’s new interview with Britney is finally here! She talks about new Piece of Me changes, she confirms that new music is coming very soon and mentions how she misses touring and gives some hope to the fans who can’t travel to Las Vegas to see the show.

Robin also confirmed that two of her songs added to the new show are “Breathe on Me,” which leads into “Touch of My Hand.

Read out the interview below:

There’s no question that pop princess Britney Spears changed the pop-music dynamic on the Strip with her “Britney: Piece of Me” resident show at Axis at Planet Hollywood.

It’s been a blockbuster success since its Dec. 27, 2013, premiere. Fans have flocked to the show, and before its second anniversary, Britney extended her contract two years through 2017.

Her residency single-handedly triggered additional pop shows, with Jennifer Lopez and the upcoming Lionel Richie at Axis, along with Mariah Carey at Caesars Palace and Rascal Flatts at the Hard Rock hotel.

Many more are to come, I’m told!

Fans, other superstars, Caesars Entertainment execs and critics have raved about Britney’s spectacular with its staging, artistic effects and her adventurous onstage stunts of flying like an angel and swinging out over the audience from a jungle tree, plus the razzle-dazzle dance routines.

My review was posted Dec. 28, 2013. Britney has made herself a valuable member of our community and in October donated $120,000 to Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation in her partnership with the organization.

We’ll be back Monday with a report on the new look that Britney has given “Britney: Piece of Me” that she began working on in December. Meantime, she answered questions via email for Vegas DeLuxe:

Are you excited for the new look to “Piece of Me”? Tell me what we should expect.

Definitely excited! I’ve added a few fan-favorite songs into the show, changed up the intro and had fabulous new costumes designed for each act. I also put together an amazing dance break to three of my favorite Missy Elliot songs. And we have lasers now. I love the look of the lasers.

Why did you want to change it up, and what’s it like working with Baz Halpin?

I’m constantly getting hit up by fans asking me to add this song or that song, and I thought it would be a great idea after two years to give everyone a little something different. I love working with Baz Halpin — he really listens to me and understands how to make my vision come to life.

How long did it take to give it the new look from thoughts on paper to working out the routines and onto rehearsals?

The intention wasn’t to completely revamp the show — there are so many parts of the original show that I love and didn’t want to change — but it’s still a long process, maybe three months or so.

Starting with concepts and ideas to creative meetings about the setlist and new visuals, getting new mixes of music, creating choreography, then going into weeks of dance rehearsals and finally putting all of the production together. It’s a lot of moving parts. It makes me tired just thinking about it all! LOL.
